St. John Street Memorial Park Project
“The Saint John Street Memorial Park will be in existence. It will stand as a lasting memorial…for all the people to know that this is a thriving community and will remain in the memories of us all.” - James Wardlow
Overview
This project aims to team up with the St. Johns Street Committee and the city of Flint to aid in creating a new experience that will preserve the memories of the St. Johns Street Neighborhood Community that had been displaced due to Uban Renewal and the construction of I-475.
The Challenge
How can we memorialize the community that once was?
The St. John’s Neighborhood Committee struggled with finding ways to memorialize their community. Building statues/monuments can become too expensive and take up too much park space.

Community & Committee Member Needs
The committee members consist of individuals who’ve lived through the Urban Removal of the St. Johns neighborhood. These members want the technology to help tell their story, enhance the park experience, and last for decades to come.
At this meeting, we also discussed what content would be displayed when using the app (statue, audio guides with graphics, etc…)
Department of Planning & Development Needs
We are continuing discussions with the city of Flint, Urban planners, and Engineers to find digital alternatives that could help cut costs and utilize the park space efficiently. This includes digitizing statues/monuments, and making them visible once scanned via QR code.

The Pitch
An overview of what UI & AR is and the opportunities it offers were presented to stakeholders.
A presentation was given regarding the implementation of AR technologies within the park to both city planners and committee members
We look at how the park could incorporate these technologies as well as the benefits it offers
